Acts 2:42 in Nicaragua

Juan* is 63. He lives alone and has only half his left leg. To make things worse, his right leg is constantly swollen and the wheelchair he made is barely functioning. Until a few weeks ago, he spent his days alone, feeling hopeless and in constant pain.

This is the story of how that all changed.

Early one afternoon, Juan received an unexpected knock on his door. When he opened it, he was greeted by a man named Jared*. Jared was in Nicaragua on an e3 church planting trip, and that day, he was sharing the gospel with any household that welcomed him in.

Juan decided to do just that. He invited Jared into his house and then listened intently as he shared his testimony. Juan was intrigued by Jared’s story, but he wasn’t convinced yet that he should be following Jesus.

Then Jared prayed over Juan, asking God to relieve some of the pain in his legs, and immediately, God did! Juan said as soon as Jared prayed those words, he felt much of his pain go away. He was overwhelmed with joy, and more than willing to say yes when Jared asked him if he could come visit again.

The next afternoon, Jared returned to find Juan moving around his house pain free! Juan said he knew it was God who had taken his pain away and he was hungry to learn more about Him. They spent the next hour reading the Bible together and at the end of the day, Juan agreed again to let Jared come visit a third time.

It was on that third day that Juan accepted Jesus as His Lord and Savior.

It was on that third day that Juan accepted Jesus as His Lord and Savior. He finally had hope again and was filled with joy. He was grateful for all he’d learned, but he was sad that Jared had to leave. He was still so hungry to learn more and wanted someone to share his thoughts with.

What Juan didn’t know was that Jared and others had also been spending time that week with his neighbor, Aaliyah*. Aaliyah was already a believer, so they’d been teaching her how to share her faith and lead Bible studies with others.

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” —Acts 2:42

On the last day of their trip, Jared introduced Aaliyah to Juan and asked her if she would lead a Bible study with him at his house. Aaliyah’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Yes! Absolutely. I will come over every day,” she said.

And so, just as it tells us in Acts 2:42, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
